This course is designed to enable potential builders and others in the industry to improve their business skills and technical knowledge so that they can successfully manage their business. The course covers the areas required for both national accreditation of the qualification and is also part of the licensing requirements of the Office of Fair Trading*. Participants may complete the whole course in order to qualify for the Certificate IV, or can choose units that are critical skills gaps for themselves or their company to concentrate on one or more units.

Unit Aim

To enable participants on the MBA's Certificate IV in Building Course to gain competence in implementing and managing health and safety on residential building sites.

Site Surveying and Setting Out

Unit Aim

For participants to establish their competence in Building setting out and basic surveying functions. Participants will also gain an insight into the role of the Surveyor during the construction process.

What You Will Learn

  • To carry out basic setting out techniques and associated calculations
  • To set up and use an automatic level to reduce observations to reduced levels
  • Using reduced levels to carry out certain calculations
  • Prepare a contour diagram and longitudinal section
  • Determine associated grades and levels in a typical drainage pipeline

The Structures Module of the Certificate IV in Building Course is the most technically demanding phase of the course. The aim is to ensure that graduates of the course have a thorough working knowledge of the concepts relating to the behaviour of structres and materials commonly used in domestic building. Particular attention is paid to the Timber Framing Code (AS 1684) and the underlying principles and terminology of structural engineering.

For participants on the Certificate IV in Building to gain the skills and knowledge required to effectively and efficiently take off quantities, estimate costs and produce a quotation for a domestic housing construction.
